Friday, October 30, 2020 So today was supposed to be the big wedding in San Diego at Grand Tradition (actually in Fallbrook). So covid, too bad, we had a great day anyway. Spent it at the "Schaum's" with some of their friends and Lauren Wheeler, a friend of Kimberley's from elementary school days who moved to Virginia Beach with her family years ago. So fun thinking back on those days. Lauren Wheeler and Kimberley Della (Sean's Mom, Fae's grandmother), Lauren, Shea, Kimberley, Lynne, Daisey and Little Fae Nate, Duffy-Stephen Duffy (above) and Sean (to the right) Oh, yes, Kimberley and I went wedding dress shopping in Virginia Beach this morning...sorry folks, no pictures for the blog. So wish I could share, but you will have to wait until next year for the big "reveal".
Wednesday -Thursday October 28-29, 2020 We made it!! Norfolk, Virginia. Covid is not winning. As we approached our East Coast destination we found that Kimberley and Nate were no longer engaged.....THEY ARE MARRIED. Wahoo. We couldn't be happier for them. I think pictures will tell it all. (Oh, yeah, and Daisey was glad to see us too....we've missed that waggy tail) We celebrated at the Hunt Room at the Cavalier Hotel in downtown Virginia Beach And just had fun spending time with the happy couple: Out takes, photo adjustments or just because I liked the photos: It was quite windy and I wanted to show the wind and rain in their back yard: AND.... another Ferris Wheel in a fun park in Virginia Beach where we were staying in a B & B: That's all for today.
Tuesday October 27, 2020 On our drive to Ft Worth we listened to a CD book called "The Devil in the White City" which was about the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. It covered in detail the planning including the details about the men who were extensively involved in it's conception and completion. Strangely, several things have happened on this trip so far that reflect back on that book. One, the feature that was to outshine Paris's Eiffel Tower of the Paris Worlds Fair of 1889 was created by George Washington Ferris. The Ferris Wheel! Although his was much grander and was the first wheel created, it is always a thrill to see one. As we left Dollywood that was the prominent feature on the horizon. It is fun to know the history behind these attractions. Another person that was prominently detailed in the book was Frederick Law Olmsted, considered to be the father of modern American landscape architecture. Olmsted worked tirelessly...
Monday - Tuesday, October 26-27, 2020 From audacious (sorry Dollywood, maybe another trip your glitter will look more inviting) to awesome...the quiet and glorious shifting of nature from her summer green dress to her austere winter garb ready for whatever winter has to offer. This will be a difficult posting because we took so many pictures that we struggled to present our favorites. I think I will try to show you the amazing and varied autumn colors that then transition to the naked limbs of winter. All had beauty. We saw all this variety as we traveled through The Great Smoky Mountain National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Appalachian Mountains for two days before we landed in Danville, VA for Tuesday night. The changes in altitude were enough to show how the trees change with time, temperature and altitude . At the lower elevations the trees were still showing their color while at the higher altitudes all the leave...
Sunday, October 25, 2020 Before we headed out for Pigeon Forge ( The name Pigeon Forge comes from an iron forge built around 1820 by local business man Isaac Love, who named it after the Little Pigeon River where it was located (which was itself named after the passenger pigeons that frequented its banks). we were able to attend church with Jan and Lee at the Messiah Lutheran Church (the churches first meeting since covid started...it was outdoors in their parking lot). We had one more great meal with Jan and Lee at their nice home and then wended our way toward Pigeon Forge via Chattanooga and Knoxville. Jan and Lee's home...lawns all over the neighborhood and no fences. No sidewalks and peaceful streets. What a difference from the neighborhoods that we find in San Diego. Lovely living room where we had great conversations Dining room where great meals and conversations happened So, see the house right...
